Child Incest: The effects of molestation can last a lifetime!

The effects of child incest are devastating and profound. Most victims of child incest suffer from guilt, shame and post traumatic stress disorder which can trigger thoughts and feelings that transport the victim back to the abuse even later on in life. Although there are no hard statistics for how often child incest occurs (the shroud of secrecy means that most cases go unreported), it is known that 75 per cent of incest cases take place between fathers and daughters or step-daughters. When this happens, the mother is usually living in the home and aware of what’s going on, at least on some level, even though she may deny it.

Incest is a profound form of child abuse, and one of the most devastating effects of child incest comes from the confusing constellation of feelings it creates: the incest was bad and shameful, but the act itself—the attention, contact and fondling by an attentive parent—may have created sensations that made the child feel good. Due to this, a child of incest usually ends up with a strong sense of self-loathing and unworthiness.
Some of the symptoms of child incest include low self esteem, depression, developmental autisms (growth is often stunted at the time that the trauma first occurred), eating disorders, fear of doctors and dentists, thoughts that interfere with healthy behaviors and the inability to form intimate relationships with others or be authentic sexually as an adult because they have difficulty sharing intimate thoughts from sexual experience.
Most victims punish themselves unconsciously because they feel that they are intrinsically unworthy. As adults, they may choose spouses who treat them poorly, careers that do not fulfill them and make other choices that create a lifetime of suffering in big and small ways. Or they may go the other way and their status as a child incest victim may make them feel self-entitled. Some incest victims drown their past in alcohol or drugs. They may have borderline personality disorder, which is characterised by sudden changes in temperament and by the statement: “I hate you, but don’t you dare leave me.”
They are also at risk for post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and phobias. Some become hypersexual as adults; while others are frigid and cannot let go with anyone, even a partner who they are beginning to trust in other ways. Their relationships with significant others tend to be dysfunctional because they have an underlying sense of mistrust for people, do not feel safe in the world and develop a secret self.
Whatever the symptoms, child incest destroys the innocence of a child and leaves a ruinous future in its wake. Therapy can help. However, the focus in therapy should be on learning how to get past childhood trauma and value the self.  Many therapists do this by guiding adults to reconnect with the inner child, feel their openness, vulnerability and desire to be loved by her parents and recognise that they were not the bad one, nor were they responsible in any way for their sexual abuse. By learning to love and parent that little child who did not have parents who valued or cherished them, adult victims of child incest can heal from their experiences, own their power and beauty and consciously change their course in life.

Traits of families that tolerate incest and child abuse
Low level of appropriate touch: In the most toxic incest families all touching is considered taboo. Parents do not hug, caress, or cuddle their children, as normal families do. This is perhaps the most telling symptom of incest.
Poly-abusive: Sexual child abuse is just one of a number of abuses taking place in an incest family. There may also be a history of family violence, substance abuse, and other criminal activity.
Duplicity, deceit, collective secrets: The incest family hides its embarrassing secrets.
Rigid and tightly controlled: Incest families have rigid rules to prevent revelation of their secrets.
Demand for blind, absolute loyalty: Incest families usually have a domineering head of household who rules the family through force.
Poor boundaries: Disrespect for each others’ privacy, rights, and individuality is common in incest families.
Parents immature and inexperienced in life: Parents of incest families usually never become fully mature adults. Conflictual marriage or troubled divorce: In incest families, this may refer to situations where children are pushed into the drama between a conflicted mother and father.
No childhood for the children: Incest families are somber and strict places, where the authority figure (usually one of the parents) dictates behavior for everyone else. Rather than let children run around and play, they force children into a regimented routine.
Chaotic situations, traumatic stress: Incest often takes place in chaotic households, with unstable roots. These families may move often and lack connections to any one community. (surrealist.org)

Detectives Arrest Sex Offender On New Charges, Roger Charette Served Time For Sex Assault Charge In 1980s!

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — Deputies have arrested a sex offender in Highlands Ranch on new charges.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit arrested Roger Charette, 59, of Highlands Ranch, on suspicion of 13 counts of sexual assault on a child, aggravated incest and habitual sex offender against children.

The habitual sex offender against children charge is a sentence enhancement, which upon conviction, requires the court to sentence the defendant to not less than three times the upper limit of the presumptive range for that class felony, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

In 1984, Charette pleaded guilty to attempted sexual assault on a child in a case from the Aurora Police Department. There were three female victims under the age of 10 in that case, deputies said. Charette was sentenced to 90 days’ jail and two years’ probation in that case.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about additional victims or inappropriate conduct by Charette to call Detective Dea Aragon at 303-814-7131.

Part 1

Breaking new ground would seem difficult to do with Christianity over two thousand years old; but it won’t be because certain truths buried for that long must now surface. For some this will be a painful subject to explore since so many have made it a taboo. You have to ask yourself why people would want to hide the truth! The common biblical saying states that “The Truth will set you free;” apparently it is too much for some to handle. Each person tends to handle situations differently which makes me wonder even more so why did people collude to not tell the truth about our subject.

In the news recently much talk about a new book titled “What the Bible really says about Sex,” but all the dialogue about the book which I have not read says it is not breaking any new ground. The only way new ground can be broken about the Bible is possibly one of many ways; either the writers simply write their fantasy or they have a spiritual encounter with God or they simple read what is there and reveal that truth to those who will listen. Are you listening? It bothers me that people have said what they want to say over two years without regard that many people can read and some read quite well. Even with the skill of reading the lie has prevailed in our society coming from the mouths of some of the most influential people on the planet!

This article is an offshoot of the series on Blog Talk Radio Sexual Healing entitled “Sex in the Bible.” There has to be something that triggers the search for the truth and this series of going through the Bible with the sole purpose of looking at each chapter and verse to determine if there is any deviation/perversion/detour in it is a slow and time consuming process that allows the listener and the teacher to discover those deviations/perversions/detours together week-by-week. Neb. man pleads not guilty in prolonged sex abuse of daughter; trial set for June jury term!

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — A western Nebraska man is headed to trial on charges that he sexually abused his daughter for years.

KNEB-AM in Scottsbluff says the man pleaded not guilty Friday to counts of incest and sexual assault of a minor in Scotts Bluff County District Court. His trial was set for the jury term that starts June 6.

The Associated Press is not using the man’s name or hometown to protect the identity of his daughter.

According to court documents, the daughter, who’s now 18, reported she’d been sexually abused by her father since she was 5. Court records say the abuse was discovered by a relative.

DNA tests may also inadvertently reveal incest!

February 11, 2011 – London

Baylor College of Medicine researchers using DNA microarrays to identify developmental disabilities or congenital anomalies in kids unexpectedly found that some have been conceived through incest.

This has raised social and legal issues that institutions and the scientific community must address.

“We have discussed these issues with legal and ethics experts at Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital, and we are considering how best to handle them,” said Arthur Beaudet, a senior author of the report.

Scientists identified cases of possible incest through what they call an ‘absence of heterozygosity.’

In most instances, an infant receives roughly half of his or her genes from the mother and half from the father. This is called heterozygosity. In the case of incest, family members, who already share much of their genetic code, each contribute to the genetic material of a child.

This will result in absence of heterozygosity in the genes of that child. In other words, children conceived through incest have large blocks of DNA in which genes inherited from the mother and the father are identical.

The most common cause for this is that the child was conceived by first-degree relatives, such as a father and a daughter or a brother and a sister.

Beaudet and his co-authors have recommended that health care institutions establish a committee to discuss these issues and draft practice guidelines that deal with issues of consent, disclosure of results and reporting.

The findings have been published in the journal Lancet.

Did Morgan Freeman REALLY have an affair with his step granddaughter!

This is a very touchy topic for me.  My most fond childhood memory of this actor( Morgan Freeman) was his role as Mr.Clark in the movie, “Lean on Me!”  Many of us who grew-up in the south (Yea Atlanta is the deep south) had a Mr.Clark.   This is why this story is somewhat difficult for me to believe.  I had to remove Morgan Freeman from the imagery of this man (Mr. Joe Clark) to the character of a more vulnerable “step grandfather.” Please be advised that it is estimated that approximately 20 million Americans have been victims of parent incest as children.

The allegations suggest that there was a more than ten year “incestuous” relationship  between Morgan Freeman and his step granddaughter.  Although, he is not her biological grandfather, this would still be deemed as inappropriate and incest. After looking at the facts, I am NOT totally convinced of the validity of the reports because all of this  information came out AFTER his wife filed for divorce. The story did break, but it appears that  African-American  communities did not buy into the allegations against Superstar Morgan Freeman,  last summer.

However, this is a very touchy topic in many of our communities and has to be addressed.  Many so-called “stepfathers” don’t see how bad this  behavior really impacts the future lives of  their stepchildren.   Dr. Diana Russell, a Sociology Professor out of Oakland, CA, conducted a study of 930 San Francisco woman. She discovered that 17% of the women, that is 1 in 6 of the women, had been molested by their stepfather.  On the otherhand, only 2% of biological fathers molested their daughters.  She also noted that most of the Very Serious Sexual Abuse was perpetrated by stepfather. (47% stepfather vs. 26% biological father)(Source: The Prevalence and Seriousness of Incestuous Abuse:  Stepfather vs. Biological Father by Diana E. H. Russell, PhD)

Some of the most serious cases of Major Depression, that I have personally treated, is of woman who were sexually abused and or traumatized by their stepfathers and fathers. Mothers this is a very serious phenomena. According to the reporters, Morgan’s step granddaughter (now 27 years old ) supposedly did tell her mother when she was seventeen. There are reports that Mrs.Freeman did confront her then husband.  However, the allegations suggest that the affair still  continued for ten years.  This is also alleged to be cited in the divorce filing by his wife.  Now parents, I am not sure of the Statute of Limitations* surrounding incest cases, but I am sure that they do exist  for this crime as with many other crimes.  Please note that this crime is punishable, by law, in most of our fifty states.  Although, I am not convinced that Morgan is guilty, I will use this opportunity to spring board into the importance of recognizing childhood incest.

I have to also mention that their is a new phenomena (within the last twenty years) where mothers/fathers are sexually abusing their sons.  This is becoming more and more prevalent. This conclusion is not yet out, on the Freeman case, but it certainly deserves honorable mention on the blog.  Sex crimes, to include incest, rape, etc.  are getting out of hand.

Warning Signs of Childhood Incest:

  • Your child will avoid or be very attached to the parent/stepparent
  • Your child will appear or actually be more sexual
  • The child may be anxious and paranoid
  • Or the child may appear disruptive and fearless
  • The child may present self-injurious behavior (i.e. cutting, suicidality or substance abuse)

As difficult as this may be for your to confront or deal with, if you suspect any form of sexual abuse of your child, NOTIFY the proper authorities immediately. This should be the case with either your young son or daughter. After this, please seek the appropriate medical and psychiatric attention for your child. This wil be essential for proper resolution of the event(s) and normal sexual development your child.

We always hope that our families will live healthy, full lives and make the right decisions. However, what happens when one of our family members become depressed, anxious, or display uncontrolled emotions? In this case, they may be suffering from a mental issue and not know it. A healthy mind makes for a healthy body; taking the Dr. Owens Mental Health Prescreen Assessment will ensure a healthier start on life!

Switzerland considers joining 8 other countries in de-criminalizing incest between adults! What do you think?

The Swiss Justice Department has announced a proposed reform of the Swiss criminal code, including repeal of Article 271, the provision that criminalizes sexual relations between parent and child or between siblings. The Department is scheduled to issue a report making the argument for the proposal this spring, but in the meantime, this one item has set off a huge controversy.

From Salon:

A Justice Department spokesperson explains, “Incest continues to be a taboo in our society, but it’s not up to criminal law to stop every morally reprehensible aspect of behavior. Rather, the law should be for punishing behavior that’s particularly socially damaging.”

Marriage between second-degree relatives (aunt/uncle, niece/nephew) is already legal in Switzerland, but the new measure would overturn the ban on consensual sexual relationships between siblings, and between parents and their adult children. (Sexual relationships with underage children would, of course, remain illegal.) The text of the bill has yet to be released, but skeeved-out opponents have heard more than enough. Barbara Schmid Federer, a member of The Christian People’s Party of Switzerland, told the Telegraph that the proposal was “completely repugnant” and that she “could not countenance painting out such a law from the statute books.”

… [S]ome U.S. courts prosecute incestuous adult relationships on the grounds that the government has a legitimate interest in preventing inbreeding. Other courts view children as forever-and-always minors when it comes to sexual relationships with their parents…

The Switzerland measure rejects that thinking and allows for the possibility that an adult can meaningfully consent to sex with their parent or sibling. The Swiss would hardly be the first to allow for this: According to a 2007 report by the Max Planck Institute (via World Radio Switzerland), China, France, Israel, the Ivory Coast, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain and Turkey do not have any prohibitions on consensual incest between adults.

Meanwhile, a Columbia University Professor recently charged with third-degree incest under New York law awaits further legal proceedings. Political science Professor David Epstein, 46, was arrested for allegedly having an apparently consensual sexual relationship with his 24-year-old daughter. Professor Epstein was placed on administrative leave after the arrest; a trial date has not been set.

David Epstein’s Lawyer Responds to YBH!

Hello John, this is Matthew Galluzzo. I am disappointed that you wrote this piece without speaking to me first, as I would have been happy to discuss these issues with you or clarify my arguments for you. In my opinion, you have grossly misconstrued my arguments, and I write now to set the record straight.

First, I take issue with your observation that it is “odd” that the Huffington Post has not condemned Prof. Esptein; he has not been condemned by the Huffington Post because he denies the allegations against him and he is innocent until proven guilty. I have never conceded his guilt of these allegations; I have argued that the prosecutor’s own accusations suggest that if anything, his daughter ought to be charged as an accomplice, rather than considered by them to be a “victim”.

Second, I am a criminal defense attorney and not a religious leader or political activist, and accordingly, my argument is a legal one, not a moral or political one. I have never argued that homosexuality is the moral equivalent of incest, nor would I. I have never argued that the two are somehow similar biologically, psychologically, or ethically. (For the record, I am not a homophobe; in fact, I fully support the gay marriage cause and could really care less what consenting adults do in private. I have also represented a number of clients from the LGBT community to the best of my ability and each of them would tell you that I was a passionate advocate for their rights). For you to accuse me of suggesting that homosexuality is a mental illness is completely unjustified and baseless.

The comparison between the two is purely a legal one, and the legal argument that I am making is not a novel one – in fact, no less a legal scholar than Justice Scalia has already made it. I suggest that you read his dissent in Lawrence v. Texas, but I will summarize the case for you:

Perhaps you didn’t realize it, but up until 2003, homosexual sodomy was still illegal in Texas and a few other states. Mr. Lawrence was arrested in Texas after being caught in the act by police officers in his own home, and was convicted of a crime as a result! He challenged the constitutionality of the state ban on sodomy, and initially lost because the Supreme Court had previously upheld the constitutionality of a similar state-level ban on sodomy in Bowers v. Hardwick in 1986.

However, in 2003, the Supreme Court overturned its own recent decision in Bowers v. Hardwick and declared that Mr. Lawrence had a constitutional right to engage in sodomy in the privacy of his own home, and that public opinion about the morality of such conduct was no longer a valid basis to deny him that liberty. In the dissenting opinion, Scalia countered that as a result of this logic, there is a very valid argument to be made that there is now a constitutional right to engage in acts of consensual adult incest. That is the argument that I am now making on behalf of my client, and i explained that to both ABC News and the Huffington Post.

If your counter-argument is that incest ought to be illegal because it is always coercive (and thus, the ban on it is necessary to advance a compelling state interest), then I ask you the following questions:

1) Should it be illegal for a 33 year old sister and a 34 year old brother to have sex with each other? Is that relationship really coercive? Or is it just gross to you? If it’s the latter, keep in mind that there a surprising number of people that think homosexual sex is gross or immoral or contrary to their religious values, and many of those people in the U.S. would like nothing more than to ban homosexual conduct or gay marriage for precisely those reasons. If you need evidence of this, see California’s Proposition 8, or the fact that the state of Texas was still attempting to uphold its anti-sodomy law in 2003.

2) Should all coercive sex result in an arrest? If so, the police would need to start arresting bosses for having sex with their secretaries, rich older men for having sex with younger less-wealthy people, and so on, and so on. Fortunately for them, there is nothing in the New York penal law that makes “coercive” sex illegal in the absence of force. Personally, and as a matter of policy, I do not think that it is wrong to say that an adult has to be responsible for the sexual decisions that they make. It is for that reason that I believe that is questionable for the prosecutor in this case to characterize the complainant as a “victim”. In fact, to suggest that a 23-year old woman is somehow incapable of making a consensual decision about sex, as you and they both do, is somewhat offensive to women, in my opinion. I concede that the idea of predators grooming their juvenile children is troubling. But I believe that the Penal Law is already equipped to deal with that problem (in the form of child endangerment laws). Also, the New York Penal Law does not call “fear of physical harm” “coercion”, it calls it “forcible compulsion”, and when someone has sex by forcible compulsion, it is called rape. So we don’t need anti-incest laws to prevent relatives from having sex as a result of a “fear of physical harm”. By the way, I have personally prosecuted people for rape by means of forcible compulsion, as I used to be a member of the Manhattan DA’s Sex Crimes Unit.

In sum, I want to be clear that I am not encouraging incest, or attempting to discourage the gay rights cause. My point is that the decision in Lawrence, if applied logically, has consequences, and one of those necessary logical consequences might be the legalization of adult incest. Liberty often does have consequences: the First Amendment gives scoundrels the right to say vile things, and we have to live with that. It is my sincere hope that American legislatures at the state and federal levels grant the LGBT community equal rights. But that is a decision that ought to be made democratically by the will of the people. (The Supreme Court’s Lawrence decision, by contrast, was a decision of the judiciary overriding the will of Texas). If the legislatures would just vote to give the LGBT community equal rights, then we wouldn’t have this logical inconsistency identified by Scalia in his dissent.
