Vatican Christmas Shocker! Pope says child rape isn’t that bad, was normal back in his day!

Victims of clerical sex abuse have reacted furiously to Pope Benedict’s claim yesterday that paedophilia wasn’t considered an “absolute evil” as recently as the 1970s.

In his traditional Christmas address yesterday to cardinals and officials working in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI also claimed that child pornography was increasingly considered “normal” by society.

“In the 1970s, paedophilia was theorised as something fully in conformity with man and even with children,” the Pope said.

“It was maintained – even within the realm of Catholic theology – that there is no such thing as evil in itself or good in itself. There is only a ‘better than’ and a ‘worse than’. Nothing is good or bad in itself.”

The Pope said abuse revelations in 2010 reached “an unimaginable dimension” which brought “humiliation” on the Church.

Asking how abuse exploded within the Church, the Pontiff called on senior clerics “to repair as much as possible the injustices that occurred” and to help victims heal through a better presentation of the Christian message.

“We cannot remain silent about the context of these times in which these events have come to light,” he said, citing the growth of child pornography “that seems in some way to be considered more and more normal by society” he said.

But outraged Dublin victim Andrew Madden last night insisted that child abuse was not considered normal in the company he kept.

Mr Madden accused the Pope of not knowing that child pornography was the viewing of images of children being sexually abused, and should be named as such.

He said: “That is not normal. I don’t know what company the Pope has been keeping for the past 50 years.”

Pope Benedict also said sex tourism in the Third World was “threatening an entire generation”.

Angry abuse victims in America last night said that while some Church officials have blamed the liberalism of the 1960s for the Church’s sex abuse scandals and cover-up catastrophes, Pope Benedict had come up with a new theory of blaming the 1970s.

“Catholics should be embarrassed to hear their Pope talk again and again about abuse while doing little or nothing to stop it and to mischaracterise this heinous crisis,” said Barbara Blaine, the head of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests,

“It is fundamentally disturbing to watch a brilliant man so conveniently misdiagnose a horrific scandal,” she added.

“The Pope insists on talking about a vague ‘broader context’ he can’t control, while ignoring the clear ‘broader context’ he can influence – the long-standing and unhealthy culture of a rigid, secretive, all-male Church hierarchy fixated on self-preservation at all costs. This is the ‘context’ that matters.”

The latest controversy comes as the German magazine Der Spiegel continues to investigate the Pope’s role in allowing a known paedophile priest to work with children in the early 1980s.

TWO GOGOS CONFESS… WE ARE LESBIANS!

By Khanyiswa Hlandze and Sibusisiwe Ngozo
IN what could be a first in the country, two elderly women have come out to declare they are lovers (lesbians). The two Gogos Alvina Gama (67) and Hletiphi Mkhonta (75) have been in love for over 10 years now. They fell into each other’s arms after the death of their respective male husbands.
They join the growing list of lesbians in the country. Residents of Ndlalambi have grown to accept that Gama and Mkhonta are pillow friends with some claiming one of them could be a hermaphrodite (incukumbili).
This assertion is motivated by the obvious fact that lesbianism is not common in the rural area. However, medically, hermaphrodites exist but it is rare to have both sexual organs function. This then points to the glaring fact that the two are lesbians.
The ‘man’ in the Gogos’ relationship, Gama, has also lived with the stigma of being incukumbili to a point that she now claims to be one. She could not authenticate her claim when pressed by this newspaper.
Gama, born Dlamini of Ndlalambi in the northern Hhohho, has three children with her deceased husband who are all grown up. She confirmed that she was madly in love with Mkhonta and did not hide the fact that they have been sharing a pillow and all the other ‘goodies’ that come with it for a long time now.
Her sexuality is an open secret in the area as everyone seems to know she has a liking for females and obviously the suspicions of her having both sexual organs.
Opening up on her life, Gama said she got married to a man as then she lived as a female. She said her female sex organ was active but after the death of her husband she lost the feeling of being female.
“The male organ began to be active only after I had lost my husband. I met my current partner, we fell in love and we decided to stay together,” she said.
Mkhonta also lost her husband but she does not have any children. Gama claims they have been together for years.
Both women are beneficiaries of the elderly grants but they also practice subsistence farming.
Though they admitted they were in a relationship, they were coy about giving more information regarding their life as a couple.
Gama has a deep voice and usually does not dress like a woman but at most times according to residents she dresses in emahiya (sidwashi).
The residents say it is known she has both sex organs and they have come to accept that she then decided to become a man after the death of her husband whom she had three children with.
According to a doctor who preferred anonymity, it is unheard of that the two sex organs can be fully functional.
He said it was unheard of that the female sex organs work and after sometime become inactive.
The doctor said this was largely due to the fact that one of the two sex organs was usually not fully developed to function.
“Some parents decide to leave both organs to allow the hermaphrodite child decides what they want but it is unheard of that the sex organs both function,” he said.
…Chiefdom aware, accepted relationship
THE community of Ludzibini chiefdom where the two lovebirds have been staying for the past 29 years, seem to have accepted their relationship.
Ludzibini chiefdom Indvuna Dumsani Dlamini said the two old ladies were known to be a couple. He said Gama was known to have two sex organs and there was nothing the chiefdom could do because she was born that way.
He said what remained a mystery was how the female parts stopped working because she was known as a wife and mother of three children.
“We know about it and we cannot do anything really because it is the life she chose to live, otherwise there is nothing we can say,” he said.
Questions commonly asked about hermaphrodites
1. Why isn’t the general public familiar with people who are hermaphrodites?
A hermaphrodite is a condition where a person has both female and male reproductive organs. Many people are not familiar with this condition because it’s not common or physically apparent in public.
2. How does a person become a hermaphrodite?
The exact cause is unknown but it is said the overproduction of testosterone by the adrenal glands could be the cause. Some pregnant mothers who have been exposed to certain drugs could have influenced the overproduction of the testosterone.
3. Since a person who is a hermaphrodite has both reproductive organs can they get themselves pregnant?
The chances are highly rare and that is because one set of organs is more fully developed than the other.

Mudra & CSR stand up for the girl child!

Shubhangi Mehta

The Brief:
CSR works in areas of eliminating violence against women, women’s health and HIV, education, engendered governance, gender sensitization and increasing the participation of women in the economy. They have come up with a new campaign which focuses on discrimination against girl child.

The film addresses the unfortunate fact that the girl-child is shunned, discriminated against and often murdered in India. The spot is based on the belief that all a girl needs is a chance. Once she has that, nothing can stop her from shining.

The Execution:
The campaign has been conceptualized by Mudra Communications.

Nirmal Pulickal, Executive Creative Director, Mudra North & East, said, “The idea of a colony of hermaphrodites (kinnar) itself creates intrigue because it is look inside a colony of people whom the world considers as freaks. They’re scary and disgusting to most normal folk. And in a sense the man walking through it reflects our trepidation. When his purpose is revealed there is an almost ‘awww…shucks’ cuteness, which, offset against the surroundings, makes it an artistically brilliant concept.”

Bobby Pawar, CCO, Mudra, commented on the work by saying, “In a country like ours, where we worship so many goddesses a lot of people consider a girl child to be a burden. The TVC portrays a change of heart of a father who regretted having a daughter a few years back and now is actually proud of being her father.”

The Final Product:
The film opens on a man entering a kinnar colony. He is teased mercilessly as he bravely ventures deeper, looking for someone. Finally, he spots the kinnar he is looking for and starts talking to her like she’s an old friend. Seeing her blank face, he reminds her that she had visited his home, fifteen years ago when his daughter was born. The kinnar tells that him if he had given her a mansion she should remember him. This is when he actually admits that he had sent her away empty-handed. The man then takes out a wad of cash, pressing it into the person’s hands. He tells her that he has come to set things right today. It ends with the pay-off explaining that your daughter will make you proud one day. Treat her same as your son.

Xpert Comment:
Sharing his view on the TVC, Nilesh Vaidya, ECD, Euro RSCG, said, “I really liked this ad. There are many ways to show how important it is to nurture a girl child. We’ve seen a lot of those ways playing out over the past few years. This one was a totally unexpected take on this oft-preached theme. And best of all, it’s not preachy.”

“Another humorous take on a serious subject. In the past too, films have been made this subject but how much of that actually has an impact on the audience is anybody’s guess. Nonetheless, the TVC has been shot well,” said Pradeep Sarkaar, filmmaker and Director, Apocalypso Film Works.

Our Take:
The TVC deals with one of the most sensitive issues in today’s world, which is discrimination against women. The campaign is not the droning one’s where a celebrity comes in and asks to stop the discrimination. It breaks the norm and how! A round of applause for the creators of the campaign for keeping the compassion of the matter intact and coming up with something as striking as this.

A grand present from CSR and Mudra on International Woman’s Day!
