Dr. Betty Price Talks Religion and Infidelity

As told by Terrence Dean

Dr. Betty Price, wife of well-known television minister Dr. Freddy Price, Jr. of the Ever Increasing Faith Ministry, gives voice and a unique perspective to the topic of adultery in the church–through the personal stories of some pastors’ mistresses. Dr. Betty Price spoke candidly to ESSENCE.com on the taboo subject.

It was 20 years ago when I started receiving letters from women of various churches who were having illicit affairs with powerful married ministers. I was flabbergasted. Was this really happening in the church? I asked myself. Then my phone began ringing off the hook. I couldn’t understand why these women were reaching out to me. I think it was because they saw my husband, Dr. Fred K. Price, and his televised preachings and were captivated by his message.

Most recently I received two anonymous letters within a week apart. Both women shared their involvement with very high-profile men of God. As I read their letters I sensed their deep regret. They expressed how they never intended on being involved with a minister and each woman was desperately seeking a way out.

The first letter was from an older, mature woman. She’d just bought a luxury condo but lost her government job after 25 years of service. Her self-esteem was very low. She didn’t know what to do because she was financially strapped. And, she was older and didn’t think she would be able to find another job in this economy. She reached out to her bishop for counseling. They began an affair. It’s been going on for three years. The second woman was from a different church. She works on a committee in which she interacts with her pastor daily. They began spending long hours together. Then the affair began. Now, she is desperately trying to get out but doesn’t know how.

Both of these women said they know what they are doing is wrong but expressed they don’t have the strength to leave. Both ministers have threatened and coerced these women. They told them, “If they stop the affair then they would be dishonoring God.” However, both women expressed they were benefitting financially in the relationships. They were stuck. Unsure of what to do. After reading those two letters my daughter said I had to write a book.

Is Newsweek using Holy Week to bash Christianity?

Richard Blake
Two articles in this Holy Week’s edition of Newsweek made it seem as though Newsweek magazine was taking the opportunity to go out of its way to bash Christianity.  The first, provocatively entitled The End of Christian America by Jon Meacham (http://www.newsweek.com/id/192583) was, of course, a good deal more nuanced than the title implied.  The basis for the contention that Christian influence on American social and political life was a poll that demonstrated that self-identified Christians in America declined from 86% of the population in 1990 to 76% in 2009.

That the influence of a religion that still could claim over three fourths of the population as adherents could be characterized as ending, seems a stretch.  Still it is clear that Meacham sees the decline of Christian influence as a pervasive trend and a good thing at that.  Meacham seems to define Christian influence on American society, not as a set of moral codes and humanitarian values, but rather as the right-wing side (and side with which he disagrees) of a number of social issues ranging from abortion, to gay marriage, to the teaching of evolution.

Expanding on the alleged theme that the Christian era in America is nearly past, is Dan Ephron’s article entitled The Guard Who Embraced Islam (http://www.newsweek.com/id/190357
Ephron’s piece tells the story of Terry Holdbrooks, an former Guantanamo guard, who experienced what might be a sort of reverse Stockholm syndrome and converted to Islam while at Gitmo.  Newsweek used the story to again advance the theme that innocents may well have ended up at Gitmo, although no mention was made of the fact that the quite obviously guilty (such as admitted 9/11 mastermind Khalil Sheik Mohammed) ended up there as well.  Holdbrooks credits his conversion to witnessing the devotion of Muslims in the face of Gitmo’s hardships, no doubt in contrast to the lack of devotion that that he had witnessed from Christians in the United States.

One is left to wonder if there were guards at a Gitmo-like facility for Christians imprisoned and otherwise persecuted for their beliefs, for the most part by adherents of the very religion Holdbrooks now admires, perhaps they too might be struck by the devotion of these much less complacent Christians.  Alas, there is no facility in the Islamic world, or anywhere for that matter, that would capable of holding those numbers.

To be fair, in fact, Christians are much more likely to be murdered, raped, have their churches destroyed or be driven from their homes than experience incarceration.  Incarceration for their beliefs is actually one of the more “civilized” persecutions that Christians in the Islamic world are likely to endure.  In Pakistan, “key ally” in the war on terrorism, many Christians are imprisoned under the nation’s “blasphemy laws,” which while they apply to acts or words defamatory to Islam, there are no Muslims that have been imprisoned for “blasphemy” against Christianity.  Imprisonment of Christians for belief related “offenses” is also common in the Bush family’s beloved Saudi Arabia (which usually holds foreign workers who are Christians prior to deporting them, considerably luckier than native Saudi Christians who are beheaded), Eritrea and others.

An estimated 11,000 Christians have been murdered in Nigeria since Sharia law from the Muslim north was imposed on Christians in the south.  http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/Printable.aspx?GUID={8C1D2863-9FE5-43E9-BA8E-B21C2FFE5158}
Thousands of others have been killed in Indonesia, Egypt, Algeria, Iran, Yemen, Pakistan, Bengladesh and the Phillipines among others.

Then there is the ongoing massacre and enslavement of nearly 2 million black Christians in southern Sudan by the same Sudanese government forces and militias that are now engaged in a smaller scale genocide aimed at black Muslims in Darfur.  Interestingly and sadly, the genocide aimed at the Christians was not protested to anywhere near the extent of the Darfur tragedy by either the UN, the US Government or Hollywood celebrities such as George Clooney and, Angelina Jolie.  http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1282/is_17_54/ai_90888285/

The example of the Iraqi Christians illustrates just how alone the Christians of the Islamic world are, and the courage and devotion they must have to hold on to their faith.  After the invasion of Iraq, Iraqi Christians, whom many Muslims blamed for the invasion, became the object of pervasive deadly attacks throughout the country, but particularly in the areas of their largest concentrations in the north.  The attacks, that the media largely ignored and no large Iraqi or coalition forces sought to repel, forced the vast majority of Iraq’s Christians into exile.  No doubt as a primarily political consideration, it is neither American or coalition force’s policy or practice to go out of their way to defend Christians when attacked.

Nor have American politicians or even religious leaders intervened on behalf of Christian minorities in the Islamic world.  When Islamic civil rights groups such as CAIR decry such practices as perceived “racial profiling” of Muslim airline passengers or companies that do not make allowances for break times for Islamic prayer during Ramadan, it would seem to be a logical time for Americans to inquire about what these organizations are doing to ensure not just the civil rights, but the very lives and safety of Christian minorities in Islamic nations.  Not only do American politicians and religious leaders miss this opportunity, but the silence is deafening.

Televangelist’s ex-husband seeks new wife on Web

Televangelist’s ex-husband seeks new wife on Web

DULUTH, Ga. (AP) — The ex-husband of national televangelist Juanita Bynum, who divorced after a parking lot fight between the two landed him in jail, plans to take his search for a new wife to the Internet with videos featuring dating tips and what he’s looking for in a mate.

Thomas W. Weeks III, a minister who runs an Atlanta-area church and is known to his followers as Bishop Weeks, said the 10-episode series will be available starting Tuesday on his Web site.

Excerpts available Friday included Weeks, 41, discussing with aides what he should look for in his third wife.

The group concludes the woman should be at least 25 years old but “with special exemptions for 21 and up if they are classy,” Weeks said. She also must want to have children with him.

“This woman has to be very discerning, and very intimate, and very social and very sensual,” Weeks says, laughing. “And on the ministry side she has to be very diverse. She can’t be ugly.”

Bynum, 49, filed for divorce after the couple had an August, 2007, fight in an Atlanta hotel parking lot that landed Weeks in jail on charges that he pushed, choked and beat Bynum.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting her, is serving three years’ probation and has completed court ordered community service and anger management counseling.

In a video on the Web site of his Duluth-based church, Global Destiny International Ministries, Weeks said thousands of people have been writing him to ask about his plans as a newly single man.

He said he wants to give people a Christian perspective on dating.

“Who is going to be the next Mrs. Weeks? Well, God knows,” Weeks said. In the video, he asks viewers to e-mail him dating advice.

Messages left for Weeks at the church were not returned Friday morning. Bynum’s Los Angeles-based publicist also did not return calls.

If Weeks does find love, his attorney Randy Kessler told The Associated Press Friday, “I’d probably do the prenup for free.”

What the Lord gave me for 2008!

December 29, 2007

What the Lord gave me for 2008 from Loren (Paul) Due:

Ezekiel 21:25 -27 NLT

(25) O you corrupt and wicked prince of Israel, your final day of reckoning is here!

(26) This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“Take off your jeweled crown,
for the old order changes.
Now the lowly will be exalted,
and the mighty will be brought down.

(27) Destruction! Destruction!
I will surely destroy the kingdom.
And it will not be restored until the one appears
who has the right to judge it.
Then I will hand it over to him.

As you meditate over this scripture and began to fast and pray for the church in America let us keep in mind that God will have the final say. He is sending Jesus to catch away a church that is without spot or wrinkle or any thing else.

In the spirit of meekness and humility,

Loren (Paul) Due, Ph.D., D.Min. writer and author of “Don’t Say A Word About This! Confronting and Exposing Sexual Perversion”

Why ”Don’t Say a Word About This!”

The book “Don’t Say a Word about This” exists because it seems no one is ready to take the banner and become the poster person for sexual abuse and other related sexual issues. It seems that no one is willing to put their life on the line for issues that polarize and paralyzed our society.

When is the last time you heard a sermon coming from a place of love on the issues of sex and sexuality? When is the last time you were able to talk to anyone about your questions concerning sex and sexuality? More than likely the answer to both questions for you is never. Why is that? It seems that most churches, church leaders, and church members are in agreement with the world concerning this matter – they will not intelligently discuss sex and sexuality without it becoming a heated discussion or bashing of someone.

These groups by being silent and secretive about sex and sexuality have in effect given much power to the men and women who supply pornography, sexual material, and related sexual subjects. The “Church,” church leaders, and members do not realize to be ignorant by choice only gives power to the enemy to use the ignorance as a weapon of mass destruction.

Each group that represents some form of organized religion or Christianity has misinterpreted the writings of one the chief writers of the Bible – the Apostle Paul. This misinterpretation has gone on for almost two thousand years, which conveniently works in the favor of those who make lots of money off sex and sexuality. You have to ask yourself why the “Church,” church leaders, and members allowed the church to be in the dark ages about sex and sexuality? Are these group leaders gaining some kind of financial remuneration for fostering ignorance?

Alternatively, is the posture of some in the “Church,” and some church leaders to protect the elite who do as they want in matters of sex and sexuality and leave the rest of the group to fiend for themselves?

The Father gave me a call to expose, uncover, and reveal sex and sexuality in a loving and caring way to people who are in the church and out of it. The book “Don’t Say a Word About This” constitutes three sources of information: 1) A complete review of the Holy Bible on all issues of sex and sexuality, 2) Review of over three hundred secular books and films, and 3) Vignettes from counseling sessions and other life situations as examples of reality.

Can a brother get some help? The way you can help is by telling your “Church,” your Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor, Teacher, or Priest, your friends, your enemies and others about this blog.
